The Grind is the New Rain Dance

An exploration of artificial effort, algorithmic droughts, and the ritual of modern creation.

A man stands in a dry field and he looks at the dirt and he sees that it is cracked and grey. He has planted ten rows of corn and the corn is dying because there is no water in the ground. He thinks about this for a long time and then he goes to his shed and he gets more seeds.

He spends the whole day digging twenty more rows and he puts the seeds in the dirt and he covers them up and he waits. He believes that if he puts enough seeds in the ground the clouds will have to look at him and they will feel bad and they will let the rain fall. He does not see that the clouds do not care how many seeds are in the dirt and they do not care how tired his back is and they do not care about his hope.

He thinks that more input will always lead to more output because that is how we are told the world works.

The Geometry of Effort

Dario is twenty six and he lives in a room that smells like old laundry and energy drinks and he has a whiteboard on his wall. The whiteboard is his map of the world and it has a grid on it that covers the last eight weeks. Every square in the grid is filled with a black mark and that mark means he stayed awake for six hours and he talked to a camera and he played a game.

Dario’s tally of 213 clips produced across for a net gain of eleven followers.

Under the grid he has written down the numbers and they say he has made forty seven streams and he has cut two hundred and thirteen clips and he has posted those clips to three different apps. He looks at the follower count on his phone and it has gone up by eleven people in ninety days. He sits in his chair and he feels the weight of the silence and he wonders what he did wrong. He decides that he did not do enough and he grabs the marker and he draws a ninth week on the board and he promises himself he will make two clips every night instead of one.

The Mystery of the Distribution

The world of the creator is a world where we have replaced the question of reach with the question of effort. When you ask a streamer why they are not growing they will tell you they need to be more consistent and they need to post more content and they need to work harder on their edits.

They say these things because they can control their effort and they can control their schedule but they cannot control the black box that decides who sees their work. The black box is a set of rules written by people in high buildings and those rules change every day and they do not tell anyone what the rules are. If you ask the box why it did not show your clip to anyone it will not answer you and so you stop asking the box and you start asking yourself if you are lazy.

Helen G.H. is a woman who spends her time looking at how people act on the internet and she says that this is a ritual of the digital age. She found a number that says ninety four percent of all the videos uploaded to the big platforms will never reach more than ten people who are not already looking for them.

Videos that reach < 10 strangers

94%

Videos with actual reach

6%

The “Silent Act” metric: of all content remains geographically or socially static, never moving beyond a small, pre-existing circle.

This means that for almost everyone the act of posting is a silent act and it is like throwing a message in a bottle into an ocean that has no current. But the people keep throwing the bottles and they make the bottles prettier and they write the messages in better ink and they think that the ocean is just waiting for a better bottle. They do not want to believe that the ocean is just a big pool of water that is not moving at all.

Solving the Wrong Problem

When the answer to your problem is hidden you will always look for a problem you can solve. Dario can solve the problem of his schedule and he can solve the problem of his output but he cannot solve the problem of the server that does not want to send his data to a new person. He swaps the hard question for the easy one and he tells himself that if he just fills every square on the whiteboard he will win.

This is a lie but it is a lie that lets him sleep for four hours before he has to wake up and do it again. He thinks that burnout is a sign of weakness and he thinks that if he stops it means he was never cut out for the life. He does not see that he is just a man trying to fix a broken pipe by screaming at the faucet.

The people who run the platforms love this lie because it gives them an endless supply of free work. They tell the creators that the best content will always rise to the top and they tell them that they just need to find their niche and they need to be authentic.

They do not tell them that the top is a very small place and it is already full of people who got there because they were first or because they were lucky or because they had a different kind of help. The platforms want you to keep posting because every clip you make is a reason for someone to stay on the app for ten more seconds and those seconds add up to billions of dollars. They do not care if your follower count moves by eleven or by eleven thousand as long as you keep the machine fed with your hours and your hope.

Dario finishes his stream at two in the morning and he feels like his eyes are made of sand. He opens his editing tool and he looks at the five hours of video he just made and he looks for a moment that is funny or a moment that is exciting. He finds a clip where he laughed and he adds some text on the screen and he makes it fast and he makes it loud.

He uploads it and he waits and he refreshes the page and the view count stays at zero. He thinks about the choice to

buy kick clip views

and he wonders if the people who use those tools are cheating or if they are just the only ones who realized the pipe is blocked. He has spent his whole life being told that shortcuts are for losers and that hard work is the only way to the truth but he is starting to think that the truth is just a wall that does not move.

The Distribution Mirage

The problem of the creator is a distribution problem but we treat it like a talent problem. We look at the person who has a million views and we think they have a secret or they have a spark that we do not have. We do not see the million other people who have the same spark and the same secret but who are still standing in the dry field with their seeds.

“The difference between the person at the top and the person at the bottom is often just a matter of whose bottle the current decided to pick up and carry away.”

If the current is not moving then it does not matter how hard you swim or how much you splash because you are going to stay in the same place until you get tired and you sink. We are told that the internet is a place of infinite scale and that anyone can reach anyone but the reality is that the internet is a series of gated rooms.

To get from one room to another you need a key and the keys are held by the people who own the rooms. They do not give the keys to people who just work hard and they do not give the keys to people who follow the rules. They give the keys to the people who help them keep the other people in the room for a longer time. If your work does not do that or if your work is just one of a million other things that does that then you are going to stay in the room you started in.

Dario looks at his whiteboard and he sees that he has run out of space. He has filled the whole board with his tallies and his grids and his goals. He takes a cloth and he wipes the board clean and the black ink leaves a grey smear on the white surface. He feels a moment of fear when the grid is gone and he feels like he has deleted his own progress.

But then he picks up the marker and he starts to draw the grid again because he does not know what else to do. He has been a worker for so long that he does not know how to be a person who is just standing in a field. He thinks that if he stops drawing the grid then the world will stop being real and he will disappear.

The Value of the Number

The cost of this ritual is not just the time and it is not just the sleep. The cost is the belief that your worth is tied to a number that you cannot move. When the number does not move you start to think that you are worth less and you start to think that your voice does not matter.

You forget that you started making things because you liked to make things and you start making things because you want the number to change. You become a slave to a black box that does not know your name and does not care about your dreams. You are doing it because the alternative is to admit that you have no power over the weather.

The Perfect Fuel

The only way to win is to see the drought for what it is and to stop thinking that more seeds will fix it. You have to find a different way to get water or you have to find a different field or you have to learn to love the dirt even when nothing grows.

But most people will just keep digging and they will keep planting and they will keep looking at the sky and they will wonder why the rain is ignoring them. They will do this until they have no more seeds left and they have no more strength left and they will lie down in the dirt and they will say that they failed. They did not fail because the game was never about them and the game was always about the people who own the clouds.

Dario puts the marker down and he turns off his light. He lies in his bed and he listens to the sound of his own breath and he tries not to think about the ninth week. He knows that when he wakes up he will go back to the board and he will finish the grid and he will start the stream and he will cut the clips. He is trapped in the cycle of effort and he is trapped in the hope that tomorrow will be the day the ocean moves. He is a skilled man and he is a hard worker and he is the perfect fuel for a machine that never gets full. He is doing everything right and that is why he is losing so much of himself to a ghost.
