Bioplastics projects set to prosper
June 28, 2011With the price of oil and petrochemicals soaring, bioplastics have become an increasingly viable proposition. As a result, the next decade will see a fundamental shift in global polymer production, with a group of new bio-based capacities being brought on stream.
New forecasts from industry association European Bioplastics suggest that global bioplastics output will breach the 1m tonne/year mark this year, with production to more than double from 2010-2015. The study shows that bioplastics will total 1.7m tonnes/year within the next four years, up from around 700,000 tonnes/year in 2010.

Where to find biodegradable materials
June 18, 2011Standardization institues provides list of their certificate holder compostable products. See the impressive listing of Din Certco (see also below for those of AIB vincotte and the Japan bioplastic association …)
DIN CERTCO operates a certification scheme for compostable products made of biodegradable materials and licenses the use of the corresponding Mark developed by European Bioplastics (the former IBAW Interest Group for Biodegradable Materials).
Certification is here an integral part of an industrial recycling system. It enables compostable products to be identified by a unique mark and channelled for recovery of their constituent materials in specially developed processes. The Compostability Mark thus conveys product information to waste-disposal plant operators and product image to consumers.
A certfication can be conducted according to the following well international accpeted standards:
DIN EN 13432 “Packaging – Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation – Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging”
ASTM D 6400 “Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics”

In order to improve the situation, M-Base Engineering + Software GmbH with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hanover started a project to create a Biopolymer Database which will contain a full overview of the market.
The guideline is the well known CAMPUS® database. The new database will allow quick and easy access to information about biopolymer producers, contact persons and material properties, like mechanical properties, permeability, degradation or processing behaviour. Due to an enormous high interest from the market a pre-release of the project results has already been published on the internet, including exclusively data provided by biopolymer manufactures which are present at the market. Les dernières opportunités sur le marché des bioplastiques / HGCA reveals UK bioplastics opportunities
June 20, 2009HGCA reveals UK bioplastics opportunities
Simeon Goldstein, packagingnews.co.uk, 11 May 2009
Cereals body HGCA has published a study into the opportunities for UK farmers to grow cereals and oil seeds for use in bioplastics. HGCA industrial uses manager Richard Saffod said an increasingly carbon conscious world meant there was “tremendous potential” for bioplastics to increase from its current low level of 0.1% of total plastics production.
“In the future, we expect there to be opportunities for UK farmers to provide sustainably-produced, low carbon feedstocks for bioplastics manufacture within the UK,” he said.
The report, and accompanying leaflet, examines a number of areas including key drivers and barriers to use, end-of-life disposal and life-cycle analysis and the potential manufacture in the UK.
“The report is designed to have a wide audience ranging from growers, bioplastic resin and packaging manufacturers through to retailers,” said Safford.
The full report can be read by clicking here. Alternatively, click here to read a summarising leaflet.
